We are avid believers in the idea of the right tool for the job, and disciples of the quiver school of ski ownership. However, we realize not everyone enjoys the same privilege, and even we get analysis paralysis when it’s time to leave with a single pair—be that from the truck for the day or the country on an international flight.
The Commander 102 offers the best characteristics of its freeride-comp lineage: a directional profile with a flat, supportive tail, incredible confidence and composure at speed, race-worthy power and edge hold, and plenty of rope to hang yourself as high off the deck as you want. But because we have high insurance deductibles, we dialed things back just enough to make it—in the right length, mind you—surprisingly easy to dump speed in a fit of panic or pilot through tight spaces when need be.
The Goldilocks result of spending countless mornings debating between the hardpack-ripping 98 and the big-line bomber 108 of yesteryear, hoping the conditions match our decision—and concluding that we’d like to keep our options open.
An all-new ski, inside and out, it boasts a completely new shape and profile for faster engagement and intuitive driveability. Inside, it’s packing our most substantial construction to date, and a round, supportive flex profile for optimal support and composure in adverse conditions. On the outside, a brand new, meticulously refined sidecut for an even longer, more accessible effective edge provides unshakable edge hold. A bit deeper tail rise complements the sidecut to make it more docile when you’ve bitten off more than you can chew or you’re skiing at half speed, running on fumes.
The Commander 102 drives harder and carves faster while staying calmer in the clutch than any of its predecessors. Hearing that, we know some of you get big-headed and think you need the biggest and baddest, so here’s your disclaimer: If all you’re after is a big stick to pose with in the tram line—this ain’t it. Unless you’ve got the skills to pay the bills we strongly suggest sizing down from where your ego steers you. It’s still plenty supportive, not to mention more fun to ski. Believe us—we didn’t even bother testing big sizes until we had things dialed in.
So here’s what you’re getting: First and foremost a ski designed to excel in punchy, chunky, and choppy conditions, built to ski fast, carve hard, and expand your comfort zone. For those of you who decide to go big, you’ll find a big-mountain ski that pushes the limits of your envelope and puts pucker airs to bolts—poor conditions be damned. That’s not a threat, for the record. It’s just a promise.
