About Us

The Ultimate Ski Shop

Family owned and operated since 1963.

Our Story

Since 1963, Skier’s Sportshop has been a destination for serious skiers in Edmonton. Founded by George and Doreen McAvoy, the shop began on 101 Street just north of Jasper Avenue before moving nine years later to its current location on 109th Street in the heart of Garneau. Over the years, Skier’s helped introduce pioneering ski brands like K2 and Head to the local market, brands that remain part of the store today. What started as one of Edmonton’s earliest ski shops has grown into a trusted destination for generations of skiers and snowboarders.

As a family-owned and operated business, Skier’s has always placed customer care and service first, a philosophy established by George and Doreen and is continued today by their son Kelly and daughter Jodi. Many dedicated staff return each year, committed to fitting every customer with equipment tailored to their individual needs. While brands and technology continue to evolve, the commitment, dedication, and welcoming, home-like atmosphere that defined Skier’s from the beginning still defines the store today, now proudly serving a third generation of customers.

Proudly Serving a Third Generation of Customers

While brands and technology continue to evolve, the commitment, dedication, and welcoming, home-like atmosphere that defined Skier’s from the beginning still defines the store today.

Our Founder

George McAvoy was born in Edmonton and raised on the city’s south side. The oldest of four boys, he showed strong leadership and athletic ability from an early age. At just sixteen, George left home to play hockey for the Montreal Junior Canadiens, beginning what would become a successful hockey career. He went on to captain the 1955 World Championship–winning Penticton Vees, played for the Montreal Canadiens in the 1955 Stanley Cup Finals, and spent ten seasons in the American and Western Hockey Leagues with stops in Cleveland, Providence, and Calgary. During his time with the Rhode Island Reds, the team won the Calder Cup.

After retiring from hockey, George returned to Edmonton and, with the help of childhood friends Dave Astley and Charlie Nelson, opened Skier’s Sportshop. Over the years, George became the sole owner and a well-known figure in the community, respected for his leadership, authenticity, and genuine commitment to people.

George passed away in 1998, but his legacy continues to live on through the multi-generational family business he built. More than five decades later, the store remains family-owned and operated, carrying forward his commitment to community, customer service, and the values that continue to define it today.

Investing in Community

Proudly Canadian, Skier’s supports local ski clubs and various local charities, including minor sports teams, young skier’s and a variety of events. The Skier’s film fest showcases industry productions featuring up and coming talent on the hill and in production. Along with our customer appreciation nights, our education seminars also support local professionals providing information on new products, heli-skiing and best practices for powder skiing.
