The Skier’s Sportshop has been a destination for serious skiers since 1963. Started by George and Doreen McAvoy, it was one of Edmonton’s earliest ski shops. It was originally located in Edmonton’s downtown area, specifically 101 Street, just north of Jasper Avenue. After nine years of growth, the store relocated to its current site on 109th Street, in the heart of Garneau. Since its inception, Skier’s has pioneered such brands as K2 and Head. These products can still be found in our store today.
Through the years, Skier’s has been known for its welcoming and relaxed environment. Customer care and service has been and still is the number one priority. This service was established by George and Doreen, and continues today through their son, Kelly, and their daughter Jodi. Skier’s is happy to say that we are now seeing a third generation of skiing and snowboarding customers come through the doors of our lodge. Drop by and see us soon!
About our founder
George Mcavoy
George was born in Edmonton and raised on the South Side. He was the oldest of four boys and demonstrated early on his leadership and athleticism.
George left home at the age of sixteen to play hockey for the Montreal Junior Canadiens. This was the beginning of a successful career. He was the Captain of the 1955 World Championship winning Penticton Vees. He played for the Montreal Canadiens in the 1955 Stanley Cup finals. He played ten seasons in the American and Western Hockey Leagues with stops in Cleveland, Providence and Calgary. While playing with the Rhode Island Reds, they won a Calder Cup.
After retiring from hockey, with the help of childhood friends Dave Astley and Charlie Nelson, George opened Skier's Sportshop in Edmonton. Through the years, George became sole owner. He passed away in 1998 but is still remembered as a natural leader. He was very involved in the community and known for his authenticity. A tribute to George is that the store is still operating 53 years later and his presence is still felt.

Where we are today
Being a family owned and operated business we pride ourselves on customer service and appreciation. Many of our dedicated staff come back each year with a commitment to fitting each customer with a product unique to their individual needs. Brands and products are always evolving and changing to ensure that all customers are able to find what they are looking for. Although trends continue to change, the commitment, dedication and home-like atmosphere established by George and Doreen McAvoy continue to live on.
